Scream 6
Ghostface takes New York by storm, looking to finish the Carpenter sisters (and whoever else is in his path). Who is it behind the mask this time- and why?
I was hyped as hell for this movie when I heard about it. Scream 5 had done such a great job, having been the first movie since the passing of Wes Craven. It introduced some great new characters and tied into so many parts of the legacy movies. AND this shit was going to be set outside of Woodsboro?! Scream 6 had alotttttt going for it. And honestly? It was pretty dope- but not the best in the series.
The Carpenter sisters and their rag tag gang are living in New York, with the younger Carpenter attending college. The group all share an apartment together, which they have secured thoroughly to protect themselves (and rightfully so). But Ghostface soon makes an appearance, killing a pair of students- and striking very close to the gang. As they attempt to escape Ghostface’s grasp in the the big apple, the race is on to see find out who is behind the mask this time- and why.
Like I said, Scream 6 was a great movie and tons of fun to watch. The Carpenter sisters are a great addition to the series and bring a depth of character that keeps viewers invested. The twins are also so much fun, bringing in the meta analysis that their uncle (Jamie Kennedy) had brought in the original movie. This movie also brought back Kirby (Hayden Panettiere), a horror fiend from Scream 4 who captured the hearts of many. Though it was a lot of fun to watch, it definitely didn’t top Scream 5. The story could have been expanded upon a bit, especially when it came to introducing new characters (read: suspects). We were working with a short roster, and I wished I would have had more suspects to choose from when guessing whodunnit. Also, the movie didn’t have my gurl Cindy Prescott in it, and didn’t give the rumored twist regarding Stu Macher that has been going around for years.
Rating: I give the movie 8.5 Ghostface’s out of 10 because though it was a fun watch that tied in the old and the new well, it seemed like it was missing a bit when it came to the story and characters. Plus, I’m docking a point for the no Neve Capmbell.
If you are looking for a movie in line, watch Scream 5. Of course, it’s got many of the characters and a similar set up as all the movies- but it was definitely done better. If you are looking for something outside of the franchise, check out X. Not so much a “whoddunit” as Scream, it’s a modern slasher with a great cast. Plus, the third part of the trilogy is in the works- so catch up before it’s out.
If you are looking for books in the same line, check out The Final Girl Support Group by Grady Hendrix. A group of slasher survivor final girls meet to provide comfort and support for each other. But things go awry as the girls begin to get attacked. The book leaves you guessing who is behind the mask, and does a great job of tying into some of our favorite slasher tropes. You can also check out My Heart is a Chainsaw by Stephen Graham Jones. A slasher obsessed teen loner is doing her best to get by in her small town, only to realize a slasher is unfolding right in front of her. As she attempts to stop the events and warn the townspeople, she must act quickly to save the final girl. It’s a fun read and a great introduction to the Indian Lake trilogy.
So let me know- where does Scream 6 place in the series in your opinion? Top 3? Get at meeeee.
